Keeping plumbing chat focused without being abrupt

A visitor may ask unrelated questions or continue a general conversation that does not help the business answer or route a service inquiry.

01

The decision to make first

A visitor may ask unrelated questions or continue a general conversation that does not help the business answer or route a service inquiry. Use a friendly scope reminder and offer the supported next actions instead of allowing the chatbot to become an unrestricted general assistant.

02

What the handoff should contain

Define supported office questions, service-request actions, escalation choices and a courteous ending when the visitor does not need them.

03

Suggested wording to approve

Example wording: “I can help with this business’s service information or a request for the office. Would you like to check coverage, ask an office question or leave a request?”

04

Test the difficult case

Test a playful off-topic request, repeated irrelevant prompts and a return to a legitimate plumbing inquiry after the reminder. Do not answer unrelated personal, technical or sensitive questions merely because the underlying model can produce a plausible response.

05

Worked example

Fictional example: A visitor asks several unrelated trivia questions and then returns to a genuine request for service hours. The assistant should provide a courteous scope reminder during the unrelated exchange and still answer the legitimate approved question afterward. The boundary should keep the tool useful without punishing a visitor for briefly going off topic.

06

Review it in operation

Review whether scope reminders preserve the useful conversation and avoid counting lengthy unrelated exchanges as successful customer assistance.
