Rolling back a plumbing integration change

A new field map or automation rule can damage an otherwise stable handoff if the team has no clear way to return to the previous behavior.

01

The decision to make first

A new field map or automation rule can damage an otherwise stable handoff if the team has no clear way to return to the previous behavior. Version the working configuration, define a rollback trigger and keep the previous approved path available until the replacement is verified.

02

What the handoff should contain

Record the old and new mapping, change owner, test evidence, deployment time and any records created while the new version was active.

03

Suggested wording to approve

Example wording: “The office is reviewing a connection change. Until it is confirmed, requests will use the previously approved capture and handoff process.”

04

Test the difficult case

Introduce a controlled mapping error in a test environment, restore the previous version and confirm that a fresh inquiry arrives correctly. Do not delete existing customer records to make the new integration appear clean; reconcile affected test or production records explicitly.

05

Worked example

Fictional example: A mapping update accidentally places the callback number in a notes field staff rarely read. Roll back to the approved map, then verify a fresh fictional request. Separately identify records created during the faulty version for correction; restoring configuration alone does not repair the business records already affected by it.

06

Review it in operation

Review whether rollback instructions were sufficient for another operator and document any hidden manual step discovered during the exercise.
